In April 2026, Lorna Gordon and Andrea Ronald completed a successful visit to Zomba Mental Hospital, Malawi. This was Lorna’s third trip and Andrea’s second. The visit focused on strengthening risk management practices and improving incident reporting processes within the hospital setting. A key element of the trip was the direct mentoring and support provided to nurses, nurse in-charges, and other members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT). Through coaching, discussion, and practical guidance, the team worked to enhance staff confidence and capability in managing risk and promoting patient and staff safety. The visit also included the delivery of training on personal safety and the prevention and management of violence and aggression. More than 200 staff members participated in the training, including nurses, clinicians, hospital attendants, security guards, and kitchen staff. The sessions aimed to improve awareness, preparedness, and response to challenging situations, contributing to a safer environment for both staff and patients.Alongside the educational work, fundraising efforts before the trip generated nearly 6 million Malawi Kwacha. Following consultation with the Risk Management Committee, these funds were used to purchase 20 two-way radios and spare batteries. This investment will enhance communication across the hospital and support faster responses to incidents and emergencies, further improving staff and patient safety.
